Takumi Minamino backed to explode at Leeds United after source's £17m Liverpool reveal - pundit

Takumi Minamino could refind his best form if he swaps Liverpool for Leeds United, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Minamino may be struggling under the weight of expectation at Liverpool.

A Reds source told Football Insider on Saturday (11 June) that Wolves are leading the race to sign the 27-year-old ahead of both Fulham and Leeds.

He has two years left on his current contract but Liverpool will let him go this summer and have placed a £17million valuation on him.

Minamino worked under Jesse Marsch at Red Bull Salzburg before his £7million move to Anfield in January 2020 and Agbonlahor has claimed that could give Leeds the edge.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “When I watched him at Salzburg when he played that one game against Liverpool he looked really good.

“Liverpool just bought him after that one game. At Liverpool, he’s not really kicked on, but maybe the pressure of Liverpool, we’ve seen it with the likes of [Christian] Benteke, can get to players.

“If he went somewhere like Leeds you would see more out of him.

“If Jesse Marsch knows him well then it could work. It will be interesting.

“We know how hard it is to get players so if they know they can get one they might go for it.”

Minamino played a key part in Liverpool’s successful 2021-22 campaign.

The Japan international ended the club’s top scorer in both the EFL Cup and FA Cup as they won both trophies.

In other news, there has been a “huge” update on Aston Villa’s bid to sign a Liverpool star.
