Celtic are close to agreeing an extended contract for striker Leigh Griffiths.
The 27-year-old forward is already under contract until 2021 but this major new deal could see him play out the remainder of his career in the Hoops.
He is now ready to target the number one striker spot, despite the club-record deal for Odsonne Edouard.
Talking about his potential new deal, Griffiths said: “We are inching further forward on that. It’s getting closer. There’s not far to go. We are about 85 per cent done now.
“A couple of tweaks are needed and then it will be done.
“The new contract won’t be a weight off my mind. I’ve got two and a bit years on my current deal, but the fact they are even talking about a new contract gives me joy and delight that I am going to be here for, basically, the rest of my career.
“When it does get done and signed I will be delighted.”
Football Insider verdict:
If you’re a Celtic fan this is exactly what you want to hear from a player who could well be seen as the third choice striker at the moment. Griffiths has been a fantastic servant for Celtic and he’s only two goals shy of 100 goals. After injuries last season he has set his sights on being Rodgers’ first choice but that’s going to be a tough ask. His side have paid a reported £10m to sign Edouard on a permanent deal and if Griffiths ended up as first choice something will have gone badly wrong there. However, there is still a possibility that Moussa Dembele could depart this summer, which would leave him with more more chance of regular game time. Irrespective, Celtic have a really tough start to the season with eight Champions League qualifiers and Rodgers knows he needs strength in depth and different options up top. That he’s got someone willing to commit the rest of his career despite the uncertainty of game time is testament to the loyalty that he gets from his players, as well as the draw of playing for Celtic and the love Griffiths has for playing for Celtic.
