Tanganga in trouble at Tottenham after what pundit has seen
Noel Whelan has claimed Emerson Royal has the edge over Japhet Tanganga in the battle to be first-choice Tottenham right-back.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 22-year-old ‘ticks every box’ for his position.
Emerson dominated in Spurs’ 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday (October 4th), completing 100% of his dribbles, making seven clearances and four interceptions (SofaScore).
The Brazillian also had the most touches in the game, highlighting his constant threat to the Villains down the right flank (86).
Emerson lost his place to Tanganga for last week’s north London derby loss against Arsenal but bounced back in style as Spurs arrested their Premier League freefall.
As exclusively revealed by Football Insider in August, Tottenham scrapped plans to loan Tanganga out – with the versatile youngster expected to become a key part of the first-team squad.

However, Whelan claimed that Emerson could have displaced him at right-back following his promising Villa display.
“I think he could have the edge over Tanganga,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“You’ve got to be able to play the full role now – you’re not just a defender, you’re a midfielder and sometimes even a winger.
“He’s got to work box-to-box. There are many parts of that position where he’s fantastic, he ticks every single box.
“You can see how high he likes to get; he’s got a really good attacking presence.
“He wants to take people on and link up when he gets into those dangerous areas – but he can defend as well.
“He’s got the athleticism you need for the role with the amount of ground he covers.
“For me, he’s a natural. He’s the one they’ve brought in for this specific role.”
