David Luiz is an accident waiting to happen at Arsenal this season, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and Coventry City striker “can’t believe” the Londoners have tried to solve their defensive issues with the signing of the Brazilian.
Whelan explained how Luiz’s new Arsenal teammates won’t trust the centre-back because of his error-prone playing style, which was evident once again in yesterday’s 2-2 draw against Watford.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice in the first half for the visitors but the Hornets hit back through Tom Cleverley and a late Roberto Pereyra penalty that had been conceded by Luiz.
“David Luiz is not the answer for Arsenal,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He’s brilliant on the ball, but more of a footballer than a defender. The dressing room don’t trust him, you could see that yesterday.
“There’s been so many times he’s let his team down with poor defending and decision-making, he’s a fragile centre-back.
“If Frank Lampard thought David Luiz could have done a sound job for him this season, there’s no way he would have sold him to Arsenal.
“Lampard has seen enough of him to know he has better defenders at Chelsea, who he can rely on to do a job for him.”
Luiz was surprisingly signed by Arsenal for £8million in the final 24 hours of the summer window.
He has started four of the Gunners’ five Premier League matches this season, but had a difficult start for his team after making a number of serious errors.
