Thiago could 'hand in Liverpool transfer request' after journalist update - pundit

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara could hand in a transfer request if Barcelona make a concrete move for him next year.

That is the view of ex-Premier League striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 30-year-old’s future at Anfield amid reported interest from Spain.

According to Portuguese journalist Pedro Almeida (November 10th), new Barca boss Xavi wants his former teammate Thiago to join him at the Nou Camp.

Liverpool signed the centre-midfielder little over a year ago in a £20million deal from Bayern Munich.

He has two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract at Anfield.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the news, Campbell said: “Obviously, Barcelona is his club.

“If the legend that is Xavi wants you back to be his dictator, it is hard to turn down.

“I could see him handing in a transfer request if a concrete move is made. It is the lure of your boyhood club. It is such a big draw.

“He’s a top player so it’s of no surprise to hear Barcelona are interested in him.

“Liverpool are in a strong position though as he still has a few years left on his contract.”

Thiago has made seven appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season.

He made his return from a calf injury as a second-half substitute against West Ham prior to the international break and is in contention to start against Arsenal on Saturday.
