Kevin Phillips compared Eric Dier to James Milner after the Tottenham defender put pen to paper on a new long-term deal in North London.
The former Sunderland and West Brom striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested that the 26-year-old’s apparent move to centre-half may provide Tanguy Ndombele with a second-chance at Spurs.
The club confirmed on Tuesday that the England international had signed a contract extension that will keep him with the Lilywhites until the summer of 2024.
Dier, who has predominantly used as a defensive midfielder by Mauricio Pochettino, has been utilised in the heart of the Spurs defence since Jose Mourinho took over.
Phillips claimed that former Sporting Lisbon man is Tottenham’s James Milner because of his versatility.
“It is always good to have a utility player in your squad,” he told Football Insider.
“He is like Milner at Liverpool as he can play all sorts of positions.
“Mourinho sees him as a centre-half so that could be his solution for next season.
“If he comes out of the midfield area it may free up a slot for Ndombele who might perform next season.
“It is always good to see a long-term servant of the club handed a new deal.”
Ndombele has not started a game since he was withdrawn at half-time against Burnley back in March.
The midfielder, who has featured 29 times this campaign and scored twice, is the club’s record signing.
