Tony Adams: I recommended current Tottenham first teamer to Arsenal

By Harvey Byrne

Arsenal great Tony Adams has revealed he once recommended current Tottenham first teamer Eric Dier to the Gunners.

The versatile 23-year-old made the switch to Spurs in the summer of 2014 from Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth just £4million.

In the same summer Arsenal splashed out a massive £16million to prise young defender Calum Chambers from Southampton, who has just spent the season at relegated side Middlesbrough.

While Chambers was attempting to keep Boro in the English top-fight, Dier, who cost £12million less played in 36 of Spurs’ 38 Premier League matches and helped Mauricio Pochettino’s side to a second placed finish.

Now, Adams has told that after he recommended Dier to Arsenal they passed up on the option as they believed him to be too “one-paced.”

“I recommended Eric Dier to Arsenal,” told Adams to the Times.

“I did the England under-19s with Blakey [Noel Blake in 2012], and phoned [Arsenal scout] Steve Rowley and said, ‘Dier’s head and shoulders above any English player in this camp. Do it now. €5 million’. I knew the get-out clause at Sporting. Steve said that Arsenal’s Portuguese scout said he was a bit one-paced. So Arsenal didn’t. They did get Calum Chambers for £17 million — no disrespect to Calum. Spurs got Dier, pushed him into midfield, maybe he hasn’t got the aggression, but in the modern game now, you don’t need to be aggressive so he’ll probably end up the perfect central defender.”

Dier, 23, has become a regular feature for both Tottenham and England since his move from Sporting Lisbon and he has played in 135 appearances for Spurs, while featuring 17 times for the Three Lions.

Meanwhile, Chambers, 22, has played just 59 times for the Arsenal first team, while also being capped by England just three times.

The Arsenal decision makers will now feel they made a big error with their choice of signing if Adams’ words are true.
