Manchester United are in the hunt to sign Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld, according to a report
The Manchester Evening News claims that United are monitoring the 28-year-old’s situation in North London as he continues to stall on signing a new deal.
It is understood that Alderweireld’s current contract is due to expire at the end of next season, and although it has the option to be extended by a further 12 months, that would trigger a release clause of £25million.
The Belgian international is said to have his representatives holding talks over a new deal and the Daily Mail has previously reported he wants to more than double his current earnings of £50,000-a-week to north of £110,000.
Speculation around Alderweireld’s future at Spurs has intensified in the past few days after he was also left out of the squad that travelled to Italy on Monday to play Juventus in the Champions League last-16, with the Telegraph reporting that the centre-back’s future is in doubt.
Football Insider verdict
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy can only continue to keep playing hardball for so long. He runs a tight ship in North London and does not allow the club’s spending on wages to spiral out of control. It’s an admirable approach but Tottenham have come along way in the past two seasons and failing to financially reward the best players could have adverse effects. It won’t be too long before Spurs lose some of their best players to teams that are willing to splash the cash. If Spurs do not do it sooner, rather than later, they could slip back into Premier League obscurity and kiss goodbye to eternal glory.
In other Tottenham news, legend Graham Roberts has claimed that this Spurs star will sign a new contract.
