Sources: Atletico Madrid submit bid for Tottenham star Emerson Royal amid '£20m+' claim

Atletico Madrid have submitted a bid for Tottenham defender Emerson Royal, Football Insider understands.

The Spanish giants have set their sights on luring the right-back from Spurs this summer after losing Kieran Trippier to Newcastle United in January.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Atletico have tabled an offer for Emerson, 23, after learning that Antonio Conte is willing to let him go.

Spurs are seeking a £20million-plus fee for the defender, a year after he joined from Barcelona in a £25.8million deal.

At Tottenham, Matt Doherty started many of the club’s matches in the new year at right wing-back with 2021 signing Emerson the first choice at the start and end of the campaign.

Neither has completely convinced Conte and it is likely that a one will leave with a new right-sided defender arriving this summer.

Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence has been identified as a top target and extensive negotiations have been held over a potential deal.

Football Insider revealed on 10 June that Tottenham were in advanced talks to sign the 21-year-old in a deal worth up to £20m in total

An agreement has yet to be reached but Spence is keen to join Spurs and talks between the two clubs are continuing.

Emerson has made 44 appearances for Spurs in his single season for the club to date.

He has four more years remaining on the contract he signed last year.
