Tottenham backed to complete £70m Martinez signing amid source's update - Phillips

Kevin Phillips insists Tottenham need to sign a new star striker even if Harry Kane stays at the club and predicts a deal can be done for Lautaro Martinez.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest Spurs transfer news.

A Tottenham source told Football Insider today the club remain hopeful of signing Martinez despite his agent going public with Inter Milan plans to tie him to a new contract.

This comes after reports Inter won’t sell both Martinez and Romelu Lukaku this summer.

Inter are facing financial troubles and need to offload some senior stars.

Spurs have made a concerted move for £75million-valued Martinez as they face a major battle to keep hold of Kane.

The England captain’s future is still up in the air but Phillips claims Martinez is exactly the kind of player Spurs should be targeting.

“You have to make provisions in the case Kane leaves,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It’s a matter of time so Tottenham are lining up someone else to come in.

“If it was Martinez, Inter are getting £160million in the space of a week with Lukaku going.

“How much are Tottenham paying? £60million? £70million? That’s not bad.

“They aren’t in a position to turn that down, we know about their financial troubles.

“They need a great signing like him even if Kane doesn’t go so I can see it happening for £70m, they won’t reject that.

“It might not end up being him but they need a player like that to push on.”

Lukaku rejoined Chelsea yesterday (12th August) after leaving the club in 2014.

Tottenham are gearing up for their first game of the new Premier League season, a home clash against Man City on Sunday.
