Tottenham board 'sent clear message' by Conte after source's January signings reveal - pundit

Antonio Conte realises the Tottenham job “is bigger than first thought” and will demand money to strengthen in January.

That is the view of former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Lilywhites’ transfer plans.

As quoted by Football.London (1 December), Conte said he “did not talk about January” transfers before he accepted the job on 2 November.

However, a Spurs source has told Football Insider (6 December) that Conte is pushing the club to make multiple signings in the mid-season window.

The Italian manager has identified the positions that need strengthening – a proven centre-half top of his shopping list.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the plans, Phillips said: “Conte sent a clear message to the board with his comments after the Mura game.

“He has had enough time now to come in and assess the squad. He has worked with them day in and day out.

“Certain players underachieved in that game against Mura. It was a terrible, horrendous performance. It shouldn’t happen to a team like Tottenham.

“There is issues there. Conte probably realises the job is bigger than he first thought. He will demand money in the January window to strengthen.

“Do they have to sell before they can buy? Only time will tell. There are issues there that need to be addressed. Bringing players in is a priority if Tottenham are to kick on next year.”
