Tottenham holding Newcastle to 'ransom' after Winks transfer latest - pundit

Tottenham are ready to hold newly-minted Newcastle United to “ransom” over Harry Winks.

That is the view of ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Winks’ predicament in North London.

The Sun reported on 16 October that Winks is on the new owners’ potential wishlist ahead of the January window.

The 25-year-old, who is under contract at Spurs until 2024, has started just once in the Premier League this season.

As quoted by Sky Sports on 22 October, Winks admitted he “loves Tottenham” but that he “wants to play regular football”.

His inclusion in the XI that lost to Vitesse in Europe on Thursday is seen as a death knell for his chances of featuring against West Ham tomorrow.

Newcastle are the richest club in world football following their £305million takeover by the Saudi Public Investment Fund.

And Kenny claims that Tottenham could extract maximum value from the Magpies if they are to offload the out-of-favour midfielder in January.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “If they are going to get top dollar from anyone, then it would be Newcastle.

“They will be really worried about being held to ransom, I’m sure about that. But Spurs won’t care, they’ll be happy to do that.

“He is one of those players who haven’t played regularly recently. But when he’s on form, he’s an unbelievable player.

“But I don’t think he is going to get that game time at Tottenham. Would Newcastle be the right place for him to go? I think so.”
