Tottenham edge Man United in Christian Eriksen race after confirmed news - pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed it “makes more sense” for Christian Eriksen to choose a move to Tottenham over Man United this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 30-year-old’s creativity would be a valuable weapon for Antonio Conte’s side.

According to the BBC (11 June), Brentford are keen to keep hold of Eriksen despite the midfielder appearing on the Bees’ released list – which was announced on Saturday.

The Denmark international has reportedly rejected a contract extension at the west London club and is seeking a “new challenge”.

The Daily Mail claim (13 June) that Tottenham and Man United are both interested in the midfield star – who suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 a year ago this month.

When asked if Champions League football and the chance to stay in London will make Spurs a more attractive proposition for Eriksen, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I would say so.

“He’d be going back to a club he knows, and where the fans will welcome him back with open arms even if it wasn’t the best of departures.

“They need that creativity and someone who can open the door in attack. It’d be almost like walking back into his own home for him.

“Champions League football will be another factor, playing on that big stage. It makes more sense to go to Tottenham over Man United – and very rarely are we able to say that.”

Eriksen notched 69 goals and 90 assists in 304 games across his previous six-and-a-half-year spell at Tottenham.

He left for Inter Milan in January 2020 for a reported fee of almost £17million.
