Tottenham expected to replace Emerson Royal and teammate after journalist's transfer reveal - Robinson

Paul Robinson expects Tottenham to prioritise the signing of a right wing-back and a right-sided centre-half in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-White Hart Lane number one said there is “a real weakness” on the right side of Antonio Conte’s defence when Emerson Royal and Davinson Sanchez play together.

A Spurs source has told Football Insider on Sunday (13 November) that the club are planning to sell senior stars in January and are actively working on signing three players, including a centre-back.

Conte is keen to reunite with his former Inter Milan lieutenant Stefan de Vrij, who is out of contract next summer.

Spurs are fourth in the table heading into the World Cup after beating Leeds United 4-3 on Saturday (12 November).

When asked by Football Insider where the Lilywhites needed to strengthen when the window re-opens, Robinson said: “Conte clearly has an issue with his wing-backs because he changes them every week.

“Djed Spence is nowhere near the team at the moment. I’m not sure if Emerson Royal or [Matt] Doherty are good enough so you would have to sat right wing-back is a problem area.

“Davinson Sanchez is not of the level of the other centre-halves. When Sanchez and Emerson play on the right-hand side of the defence together there is a real weakness there.

“That is why I think right wing-back and right centre-half are two area the manager will definitely look at when the window re-opens.”
