Tottenham fans baffled by 29-year-old selection against Chelsea

By Amir Mir

Tottenham take on Chelsea in an FA Cup semi-final clash at Wembley – and fans on Twitter are surprised by Jan Vertonghen starting at left-back.

There have been a number of surprises to the Spurs starting XI that takes on their London rivals in a crucial cup match – including the tactic to have two full-backs in Kyle Walker and Ben Davies on the bench.

Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping his team can build their confidence and progress through to the final of this competition.

Ahead of the match, it seems as though, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier could be partnering one another at the heart of the club’s defence.

Belgium duo Alderweireld and Vertonghen have been the regular pairing for Pochettino’s side at centre-back this term.

The decision to split the key duo has surprised the White Hart Lane faithful, who stated that the decision could backfire.

One supporter believes Vertonghen is wasted at full-back and the experienced campaigner playing in that position weakens the team.

Overall, supporters were baffled by the Vertonghen’s selection and the decision to play him out of position.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Over the course of the season, Vertonghen has played 35 matches in all competitions for his side, helping them pick up impressive 17 clean sheets.

Furthermore, Pochettino’s team have secured back-to-back clean sheets in their last two home matches, beating both Watford and Bournemouth 4-0.
