Tottenham fans react on Twitter to Alderweireld return v Manchester United

By Emma Sanders

Tottenham fans reacted with encouragement on Twitter as Toby Alderweireld returned to the starting line-up against Manchester United and produced another assured display.

The 27-year-old was out of action for over two months after he picked up a knee injury during the 1-1 draw against West Brom in October.

Alderweireld returned in the mid-week Champions League victory against CSKA Moscow as a substitute but he was named in the starting XI on Sunday for the first time since his injury setback.

The centre-back is one of Tottenham’s most important players and he has built a formidable partnership with Jan Vertonghen in defence, which is arguably one of the best in the league.

Last season, the duo were crucial as Tottenham kept 13 clean sheets in the Premier League and they conceded just 35 goals throughout the 2015-16 campaign, which was the joint lowest in the English top flight alongside Manchester United.

Tottenham went into the clash six points ahead of their opponents but were left disappointed as United secured a 1-0 victory.

Alderweireld produced another assured display but he was unable to prevent United taking the lead when Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored a stunning goal after just 29 minutes.

Spurs were lucky not to concede more goals as United dominated large periods of the game and Alderweireld was unable to spark a winning performance from his side, but fans were pleased to see him come through unscathed.
