'Tottenham fans will be chomping at the bit' - Pundit reacts after ace rejects £6m bonus to sign
Noel Whelan hailed Steven Bergwijn after he rejected a massive PSV Eindhoven pay packet to push through a Tottenham move and responded with a wonder goal on debut.
The former Leeds and Coventry forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, was licking his lips over the prospect of the “fantastic” 22-year-old linking up with Harry Kane on the latter’s return from injury.
Bergwijn scored on debut as Spurs put another dent in Manchester City’s hopes of retaining the title with a 2-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
It has been reported that the rising star turned down a £6million bonus from PSV, entitled to had he stayed until the summer, such was his desire to sign for the Lilywhites.
When asked for his assessment of the winger’s debut, Whelan told Football Insider: “Fantastic player. You can see why Jose has gone out there and brought him in.
“An abundance of pace and a well-taken goal as well. That is not an easy finish by any stretch of the imagination. On the chest, the ball was sitting low – a fantastic volley. He looks really exciting and I think Tottenham fans will be chomping at the bit to see a bit more of him.
