Aston Villa midfielder's exit for 'substantial fee' could pave way for Lucas Bergvall signing
Lamare Bogarde is reportedly attracting interest from both Sunderland and Brighton this summer with Aston Villa braced for an offer.
The 22-year-old made 44 appearances across all competitions for Unai Emery's team this season, with 22 of those from the start.
The Netherlands youth international is primarily deployed at the base of the midfield, but has also appeared as a centre-back and as a right-back.
Bogarde has just two years remaining on his contract at Villa and there have been talks to extend that deal, but interest from elsewhere could change things.
Football Insider revealed this week that the Villans are interested in a move for wantaway Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall, and an exit at Villa Park could see a deal materialise.
The Sweden international is keen to leave North London this summer, with Nottingham Forest also said to be interested.
Sunderland and Brighton to test Lamare Bogarde waters
Bogarde joined Villa in 2020, signing from Feyenoord's academy to feature at the youth level.
The midfielder eventually went on loan to Bristol Rovers in 2023, spending a year there over the course of two seasons.
The 22-year-old would finally get his break in Emery's team last season, and his development since has been rapid.
Bogarde's form tailed off towards the end of this season, but he remained among Emery's first choices off the bench throughout.
According to VI, however, the midfielder could be set to leave Villa Park this summer. Brighton and Sunderland hold concrete interest, and would be willing to pay a "substantial transfer fee".
While it remains to be seen just how substantial that fee would have to be to tempt Villa into a sale, any fee could pave the way to a move for Bergvall.
Bogarde exit would require further arrival
Bergvall is not a like-for-like replacement for Bogarde. The Swede is far more of a box-to-box midfielder, even appearing in an attacking role at several points this season.
The 20-year-old can certainly replace the Dutchman's place in the squad, but Villa would likely need another more defensive signing.
Particularly to replace his cover at right-back, where Matty Cash was offered no other support amid Andres Garcia's injuries.
Villa would undoubtedly like to sign Bergvall while keeping hold of Bogarde, but their issues with the financial rules continue to hamstring Emery's plans.
