Cristian Romero exit 'certain' at Tottenham - 'there's no need for an enormous squad'

Published on

Tottenham Hotspur are "certain" of Cristian Romero's departure as Roberto De Zerbi prepares for a mass exodus.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Argentine will be one of multiple changes this summer.

Spurs have already added the likes of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke to the defence, as well as Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali in the middle of the park.

However, with all these incomings, current players are likely to be frustrated, especially those who are already struggling for minutes at Hotspur Way.

Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray are both strongly linked with moves away, as are Guglielmo Vicario, Luka Vuskovic, Manor Solomon and Mikey Moore.

Romero is expected to join one of Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid, and it may only be a matter of time before a deal is agreed after Spurs' latest business.

Cristian Romero just the start of Tottenham exodus

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson believes that all signs at Hotspur Way point towards Romero sealing an exit this summer.

"I think they'll end up having to ship some players out just to take some players out. They've obviously got no Europe next season," he said.

"So, there's no need to have a squad that enormous. In fact, it's going to be very hard to manage a squad that enormous.

"They've obviously got injuries, so players are going to come back during the season. I would expect them to... [Joao] Palhinha has gone back and they won't be signing him, they've said.

"That's one straight away that you probably would have expected to be there. I would think [Cristian] Romero is going.

"If you look at who they've signed, I think they know that Romero is going somewhere. I'm not so sure how, but it looks like they're certain."

Spurs unlikely to make profit on upcoming exits

Borson expects several more exits to be announced in North London, but the Lilywhites may have to dial back the hope of making much profit.

"I think there's gonna be sales. Whether they are profitable sales, that's a different question," he said exclusively to Football Insider.

"In fact I suspect it's going to be quite a lot in the second half of the window.

"You'll find a lot of teams just desperate to get rid of players and you're going to be selling relatively cheap given their wages."
