Cristian Romero: New bookies favourites to sign Tottenham star after source's reveal
Inter Milan have seen their odds slashed in the race to sign Cristian Romero by a top UK bookmaker after new reports of his plans to leave Tottenham.
Romero has been mooted to leave Spurs for over 12 months now, but Thomas Frank convinced him to stay last summer by handing him the captain's armband.
He signed a new long-term contract with the North London club a few months after their Europa League success, but is in line to leave this summer as talk intensifies.
The 28-year-old missed the end of last season and angered Spurs fans by jetting off to Argentina while his teammates prepared for a vital final day clash against Everton.
He impressed at the World Cup with his country once again over the last month, and several top European clubs are interested in his services right now.
Inter move to clear favourites to sign Cristian Romero as Spurs exit expected
Romero registered nine goal contributions in 32 games for Spurs last season, and featured seven times at the World Cup for Argentina.
He has played over 150 times for the club since an initial loan move from Atalanta in 2021, but may have tainted his legacy over the last few months.
Sources have revealed to Football Insider that Romero's Argentina teammates have convinced him to leave Spurs, with many currently plying their trade abroad.
With an exit bound to happen, some top UK bookmakers have installed Inter as the new favourites to land Romero this summer, at odds of 13/10.
Barcelona are also in the running, at 11/10, while Atletico Madrid are close behind at odds of 9/4 and Real are next at 6/1.
What has Roberto De Zerbi said about Romero's future?
Tottenham boss De Zerbi has already looked to bolster his centre-back options this summer, with Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke each arriving at the club.
The Italian manager was quizzed on Romero's future as he came under fire for being in Argentina towards the end of the season.
When asked if he thought the 28-year-old had played his final game for the club, he said: "I don't know. I think Cristian is a top player and with me, was a top guy. When I say top guy, it is because I'm sure of what I am saying. For the future, I don't know.
"I'm not stupid. If I understand there is any player or some player who thinks for himself before the club, I can't be the same Roberto. With Cuti Romero, I can't say nothing because with me in my time, he's been correct. At the beginning until now."
