Cristian Romero 'certain' to leave Tottenham, his teammates have convinced him

sCristian Romero is now considered "certain" to leave Tottenham Hotspur following an impressive World Cup with Argentina.

The 28-year-old was a key part of Lionel Scaloni's side which eventually fell to a humbling defeat against Spain in the final, but impressed with his performances overall.

That came following a frustrating season at Tottenham in which the centre-back was heavily criticised for his performances as his side narrowly avoided relegation.

Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Romero is now keen to leave North London, having been convinced of a move away by his international teammates.

Both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid have been strong admirers of Romero in recent transfer windows, and would allow him to link up with fellow Argentina stars.

Roberto De Zerbi is planning wide-scale changes to his Spurs team this summer, and having already landed multiple incoming deals, is prepared to sanction departures.

Former Tottenham scout Bryan King told Football Insider on 17 July that Real Madrid, Ateltico Madrid and Barcelona are all keen on Romero, with Spain his most likely destination.

Moves to any of those clubs would enable him to link up with his internationmal teammates, while he has long been expected to leave Spurs in pursuit of a move to La Liga.

Following the end of his World Cup campaign, the centre-back will have a short break, but is unlikely to make a long-term return to Spurs with clubs posied to swoop.

"Romero leaving Tottenham is a certainty at this stage, he's going to move on," Brown told Football Insider.

"Tottenham came to the conclusion at the end of last season that they can't rely on him, his performances were too inconsistent and he cost them far too may games.

"As far as they're concerned, if a good offer comes in for him, they're ready to let him move on and then build their squad without him.

"Romero, meanwhile, he's been on international duty speaking to his Argentina teammates, and I have no doubt they have been convincing him to move on.

"Most of them play in Spain, where we know there has been interest from Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, and that most likely is where he'll end up.

"He'll get to reunite with some of his teammates, and by all accounts he is keen to play in Spain, so it's a deal that works for everybody in the end, they all get what they want.

"Romero gets to move on to a new club, and Tottenham get to cash in on a player who they have been keen to replace for a while."

How do Tottenham feel about selling Romero?

Despite Romero eyeing a move away from Tottenham, there have been mixed reports about the club's stance, having previously been reluctant to see him leave.

The centre-back turned in a number of inconsistent performances last season, but ultimately remained a key part of their starting XI, leading to growing uncertainty.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson told Football Insider on 7 July that Romero is certain to leave Tottenham this summer, with De Zerbi planning to trim his squad.

Alongside Spurs' new-found willingness to move him on, Romero is also keen to make the switch, and all parties are now aiming to reach an agreement in due course.

There is a growing expectation that he will leave the club in the coming weeks rather than being part of De Zerbi's squad as they build up to the start of the new season.
