Djed Spence had his moment to remember as 10-men England beat Mexico 3-2 to set up a World Cup quarter-final against Norway.

Jarell Quansah was sent off for a poor challenge after the break, with Harry Kane scoring from the spot shortly after to add to Jude Bellingham's first-half brace.

Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez scored for the hosts, who ultimately came up short as England defended back to front.

Spence was brought on for the final 30 minutes including stoppage time, and and helped Tuchel's team see out their slender lead.

The 25-year-old's inclusion in the squad at all was highly debated, especially after he failed to impress against DR Congo.

But the Tottenham man has undoubtedly redeemed himself with the way he battled in his cameo off the bench on Monday.

England media hail Djed Spence

Spence has been linked with a move away from Tottenham this summer, with the likes of Everton reportedly tracking him.

The 25-year-old made 44 appearances across all competitions this season, but found himself out of the team under Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham would be foolish to let the defender go, however, considering his versatility.

Spence is a natural left-back, but also is more than capable of playing on the right and has done so many times.

He came on to replace Nico O'Reilly on the left on Monday, but ended up doing much of his defending through the middle.

The former Middlesbrough man made five clearances, but it was one moment that caught the eye.

With the ball having broke free in the box, Spence threw himself into a crucial sliding tackle as Santiago Gimenez lined up a shot.

"Big tackle when the ball was bouncing around the penalty area," wrote Alex Howell for BBC Sport.

For the Independent, Lawrence Ostlere wrote: "Important last-ditch tackle denied Mexico in the latter stages."

Tom Olver for the Metro, called it a "brilliant last-ditch sliding tackle".

Thomas Tuchel facing decision vs Norway

Tuchel may have Reece James back for the clash against Norway - the right-back was almost in contention against Mexico.

But the German must decide whether he wants to plug in an unfit player against the tricky Antonio Nusa or Andreas Schjelderup.

Spence's cameo was impressive, but it was in a very straightforward scenario of defence against attack.

Tuchel will take encouragement in the fact that the 25-year-old has made it a choice at all, however.
