'He's ordinary' - Ex-Tottenham scout seriously unimpressed by mega Spurs signing

Brentford midfielder Mamadou Sangare made Tottenham Hotspur record signing Sandro Tonali look average when the two faced off last week.

That is the opinion of former senior Tottenham scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

Brentford signed the 24-year-old from Lens earlier this summer in a deal worth around £43million, and he impressed massively as they smashed the Lilywhites 3-0 in their Premier League opener.

Sangare assisted Keane Lewis-Potter's opener, before Vitaly Janelt and Michael Kayode added to the score line in what was an embarrassing afternoon for Tottenham.

Tonali did not feature as Roberto De Zerbi's side beat Charlton 5-1 on Wednesday to progress in the Carabao Cup, while Sangare picked up another assist off the bench as Brentford beat Birmingham City 6-1.

Tottenham will face Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday, as they attempt to bounce back.

Brentford's signing of Sangare undoubtedly represents a major, major coup for the club and a sign of the promise behind their project.

The 24-year-old could have stayed at Lens and played Champions League football, or gone elsewhere, but the Bees presented their case and pulled off the deal.

And they are now set to reap the benefits, which look set to be massive after Sangare's impressive debut.

"They certainly couldn't compete in different areas of the pitch. Brentford looked far fitter than they did. To be honest, they looked as though they'd got better players than what Tottenham had," King told Football Insider.

"They never buy massively, although they bought the midfield boy - they paid over £40 million for him. Which is not usually a Brentford deal, is it? Brentford go out and pick up players for reasonable sums of money, and then sell them for big sums of money.

"They've got very good recruitment there at Brentford. He [Sangare] looked really up for it, didn't he? Dominated. I mean, when you think what Spurs could have in midfield, you've got [Conor] Gallagher, you've got [James] Maddison.

"You've got the boy (Tonali) they've paid an awful lot of money for from Newcastle. In that game, Christ, he looked ordinary, didn't he? It's going to be a big weekend for him in the Newcastle game."

In terms of Premier League debuts, it does not get much better than what Sangare produced against Tottenham.

The midfielder's assist was backed up by another chance created, six line-breaking passes and three free-kicks won.

He made a number of defensive contributions, too, winning two tackles, two clearances, two interceptions, seven recoveries and six duels.

Sangare may well be in line for a future move within the Premier League, but Brentford will be extremely happy with their business for now.
