Stefan Borson analyses summer market and reveals if Tottenham have overpaid for Sandro Tonali
Tottenham Hotspur overpaid in their deal for Sandro Tonali, but it is no less than Newcastle United deserve as a transfer fee.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle's risky play for the midfielder has paid off at St James' Park.
Following the exit of Anthony Gordon, joining Barcelona for £69million, the Magpies have banked another £100m from Tonali's move to North London.
This does leave Eddie Howe in a rather precarious position ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, but it does squash any concerns around the club's financial position.
Of course, this is especially important after Newcastle were fined by UEFA for two separate breaches of financial rules this summer.
The current situation at St James' Park looks rather bleak, with very few deals done so far, but the money earned from recent exits has given a reason to be hopeful.
Sandro Tonali not 'out of kilter' with previous deals, but Tottenham overpaid
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson feels that Spurs have overpaid for the Italian international, but also suggested that Newcastle had every right to make profit on the player.
"There's been slight overpayment for someone like [Sandro] Tonali, I would say. But you have to remember, this is similar with [Mateus] Fernandes," he said.
"But Tonali was a player that Newcastle bought for a huge amount of money, £60m, I think it was. They took the risk on him.
"It's worked. He's been a very, very good signing, he's still he's coming into the prime years of his career at 26. Why wouldn't they turn a profit on a signing like that?
"Of course there's the gambling issue, but you would expect a player that's been signed for £60m, it's been a big success, to go for more.
"There's a lot of fuss being made about transfer fees. I don't think they're particularly out of kilter with previous seasons.
"I think we'll also see that in the second half of the transfer window, when teams try and clear out their squad members that they don't want, it's going to be very hard for teams to get big money for these players."
Where does Tonali rank in Tottenham's most expensive signings?
Given the total lack of spending during Daniel Levy's era at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it's a pretty simple list to put together.
Spurs have splashed a club-record fee of £100m on the midfield maestro, just a few days after their previous club-record fee for Fernandes.
The former West Ham United man is currently in second at £85m, with Xavi Simons the next closest in third, signing from RB Leipzig for £52m.
He's followed by the likes of Dominic Solanke, Mohammed Kudus, and now Jan Paul van Hecke, and supporters are excited about what's to come.
