'I spoke to Tottenham legends and they can't believe what they've seen at Spurs' - Insider

Tottenham Hotspur legends were left speechless when they saw Mathys Tel's free-kick against Newcastle United last week.

That is according to former senior Tottenham scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

Roberto De Zerbi's team lost 2-0 in North London to make it two consecutive Premier League defeats to start the season, with both Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa finding the net.

Tel's free-kick came mid-way through the second half and instantly went viral on social media, after it flew into the top rows of the north stand.

The 21-year-old's embarrassing moment rather summed up what was a calamitous day for Tottenham as their terrible home form continued.

The Lilywhites have spent north of £400million this summer, but are yet to shake off the woes of the last two seasons.

Mathys Tel's 'terrible' free-kick was seen on the space station

Tel enjoyed a strong pre-season for Tottenham and even showed off his free-kick-taking prowess.

The Frenchman curled a beautiful shot into the top corner against Sydney FC in July, undoubtedly launching him up the taking order for such situations.

Tottenham fans hoped they were about to see similar when he stepped up from just outside the box against Newcastle, in a moment that would have put the home side back on terms going into the final stages of the match.

"What about the free kick they had? It went 50 yards up the bar, didn't it? You were really expecting him to bend it in the top left-hand corner there," King told Football Insider.

"And all his run-up and his pose and his getting ready, it was a combination of [David] Beckham and [Jonny] Wilkinson, the rugby player. It certainly ended up like Wilkinson because he'd have had two points there, wouldn't he?

"Somebody said the North Sea. You'll probably see the Artemis, the space station going round [the Moon] and you'll see the ball going by the space station. 

"It's laughable, isn't it? I spoke to a couple of old Tottenham stars and they couldn't believe it was that bad. Oh, it was terrible."

Troy Deeney slams Tel's free-kick

Based on the reaction to last week's moment, Tel may not be stepping up to take another free-kick in a hurry.

"I've never seen a worse free-kick in my life," Troy Deeney claimed. "And then, to have the nerve to look at the ground, at the best pitch in the country?"

The winger had actually fell backwards as he took the kick, but had been already leaning back as he made contact with the ball.

One would imagine that James Maddison's return will see Tel taken off free-kick duty, with that moment not to be forgotten anytime soon.
