Tottenham have overpaid for their 10 signings, one player is 'hugely' overpriced - ex-Spurs scout

Tottenham Hotspur have overpaid for multiple big-name signings this summer with Sandro Tonali the clearest example of their transfer largesse.

That is the opinion of former senior Tottenham scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

The Lilywhites ultimately brought in 10 new players, spending more than £400million to overhaul Roberto De Zerbi's squad.

A busy transfer deadline day saw Mykailo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo arrive from Chelsea, with the expectations now set for the Tottenham manager.

The Italian's side have started poorly by losing their two opening games to Brentford and Newcastle United, but must turn the tide quickly with another 17th-place finish out of the question.

A trip to Nottingham Forest will come next, before clashes against Everton and Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Tottenham have 'paid an awful lot of money'

Tottenham have smashed all of their transfer records out of the park this summer.

The Lilywhites have brought in their record transfer - Tonali for £100m - and have knocked their most expensive window out of the park.

That business has only intensified the pressure on De Zerbi, who will now be expected to deliver a recovery in the Premier League.

"It's all right spending a lot of money, but you've got to make these players into a team. I still can't get £100m for Tonali, hugely overpriced," King told Football Insider.

"Who's doing these deals? Totally overpriced. It's no good people saying, 'well, that's the way football is at the moment.' Well, I think people have got to start facing up to reality here.

"You're paying silly figures for pretty ordinary players, as far as I'm concerned. And Spurs have certainly paid an awful lot of money. I mean, you buy an international from Atletico Madrid, [Conor] Gallagher, when you had the chance to take him from Chelsea and you didn't.

"You then pay over the top for him, because you could have got him for far less when he was at Chelsea. And he just hasn't settled in, has he?"

What has Roberto De Zerbi said about Tottenham's summer?

Despite Tottenham's difficult start to the campaign, De Zerbi is confident that it can be turned around.

"I'm very happy. We brought all very good players. Especially because they wanted to come. I want players proud and happy to stay here," he said last week.

"To play football now you need big motivation, big ambitions. Without that part it's impossible to make results. At the moment we have a great squad, a great team.

"Maybe we have to close with another player but we have to sell a couple of players. But we can consider us very, very happy."
