Martin Dubravka backed for Tottenham starting role by ex-Spurs scout
Martin Dubravka has been backed to force his way into Roberto De Zerbi's starting eleven after officially signing for Tottenham this week.
De Zerbi is orchestrating a vital summer transfer window at Spurs after guiding the club to Premier League safety.
The club have already completed deals for Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke, while Dubravka officially arrived on Wednesday afternoon.
He will join Tottenham on 1 July after his contract with Burnley expires, following their relegation to the Championship.
Former Spurs senior scout Mick Brown indicated to Football Insider that the 37-year-old could be trusted to play regularly under De Zerbi next season.
He impressed throughout last season despite the Clarets' overall poor performances, but has initially joined as back up to Antonin Kinsky.
Guglielmo Vicario is expected to leave Tottenham this summer, while Kinsky is set to be promoted to first-choice keeper, but did struggle at times last season.
Martin Dubravka earns praise as Tottenham's goalkeeping situation laid bare
Dubravka has made 197 Premier League appearances since joining Newcastle in 2018, while he won the Player of the Year award on Tyneside for the 2019-20 season.
He was unable to prevent Burnley's relegation last term, but did make 3.63 saves per 90 minutes and boasted excellent long passing stats.
“When he played last year, Dubravka played very, very well. He made some fantastic saves. The goalkeepers of top quality aren't in abundance at the moment," Brown exclusively told Football Insider.
"(De Zerbi) is a breath of fresh air to them because he's got to start from square one and he's got to build a team. Tottenham, to me, always believe that they're better than they are, and they have thought that for the last couple of years. They finished 17th twice.
"The defensive unit is built on instability. The captain, you don't know what the hell he's going to do next. Other people around him are in the same boat. Goalkeepers, whichever one it was, he couldn't rely on them."
What is the latest on Vicario's future?
Vicario was benched towards the end of last season, despite recovering from a hernia operation, as Kinsky was preferred in Spurs' battle against relegation.
He has attracted interest from Juventus and other Serie A clubs over the last few months, and a return to his home country seems likely.
Sources have told Football Insider that Tottenham will sell Vicario if their valuation of his services is met.
He emerged with one of the worst save percentage statistics among PL keepers last season, and is set to be replaced by Dubravka in De Zerbi's squad.
