Tottenham look to be moving closer to signing Emiliano Martinez after having their odds slashed on completing a deal by a top bookmaker.

Martinez missed out on Aston Villa's opening game of the new Premier League season as they slipped to a 4-0 loss at Brighton on Sunday.

His future at the club has been plunged into further doubt over the last week after they completed the signing of Parma stopper Zion Suzuki.

The Japanese international has arrived to compete for the number one shirt at Villa Park, with Martinez constantly linked with a move away over the last 12 months.

Tottenham have emerged as a leading suitor of his services in the last few week after Guglielmo Vicario joined Juventus on a season-long loan.

Martinez may well look to make the move to North London before next Tuesday's deadline, with some top bookies believing that a transfer is getting closer.

Tottenham see odds cut to complete Emi Martinez move amid Aston Villa uncertainty

Martinez has been hailed as one of the best goalkeepers in the world since joining Villa from Arsenal in 2020.

He was expected to leave last summer amid interest from Man United, but remained in the Second City and kept seven clean sheets in 32 league games last season.

Sources exclusively revealed to Football Insider last week that Spurs have contacted Martinez's representatives over a possible move to sign him in the latter stages of the summer window.

He did not feature in any pre-season games for Villa, while an apparent lack of match fitness kept him out of their trip to Brighton.

Tottenham are interested, and one leading UK bookmaker has slashed their odds to 11/2 to be his next club after the summer window ends.

Unai Emery has shared his thoughts on Martinez leaving Villa

Emery is facing a tough end to the window as Ollie Watkins also pushes to leave Villa amid serious interest from Al Hilal.

The Basque boss explained his thoughts on the situation surrounding Martinez's possible departure before they faced Brighton, as he revealed that the Argentine stopper has asked to leave the club once more

He said: “We have signed Suzuki not for the future, but for now. He has shown his capacity and that he can play at our level. Martinez transmitted to us the possibility to have another challenge in his career, not just now and even last year, and he was thinking in case he had a possibility to change his challenges, but he stayed and performed fantastically.

“This year, again, he has transmitted to us for a new challenge, and we signed Suzuki to replace him. But the scenario we have is that we have two great goalkeepers."
