Pedro Porro: Spanish media react to Tottenham star's World Cup final performance

Pedro Porro's performance in Sunday's World Cup final has drawn mixed reviews from Spanish media.

Spain lifted their second World Cup trophy on Sunday after a 1-0 win against title holders Argentina.

It took an extra time strike from Ferran Torres to fire them to more silverware in New Jersey, after Enzo Fernandez was sent off near the end of normal time.

Tottenham right-back Porro was a mainstay throughout the tournament for La Roja, and featured for the full 120 minutes of Sunday's final.

He drew praise for how he played throughout the knockouts, but was not as impactful in any aspect against Argentina.

Porro has been linked with a move away from Spurs in recent months, and could be set to attract more attention now that the tournament is over.

The 26-year-old scored the opener in Spain's semi-final win against France, while he also bagged in their round of 32 clash against Austria.

He started all of their knockout matches and one group stage game, and was clearly told to play more conservatively against Argentina, with silverware on the line.

Porro made 90 accurate passes, created one chance, drew three fouls and made seven recoveries.

He was also dribbled past twice, while he only won four of 10 attempted ground duels, one of four aerial duels, and put in two accurate crosses of six attempted, although one towards Nico Williams did lead to the winner.

His performance drew praise and some criticism from national media as Spain bask in their victory.

LaVanGuardia wrote: "His toughest match of this World Cup. He lost several duels with Nico González in the first half. He was on the far post for the goal that clinched the title."

While Eldesmarque contrastingly said: "A brilliant performance, as ever, from a player who has put Extremadura on the map with a sensational World Cup, during which he hasn’t let anyone get past him down the right flank. He provided the cross for Ferran’s goal."

And TYC Sports also wrote: "He kept Nico Gonzalez at bay in the first half and then didn’t have any further trouble in his area."

What has Porro said about his future at Spurs?

While City have targeted Porro in the last few months, he signed a new contract extension last month to tie his future to Tottenham until June 2031.

Roberto De Zerbi views him as a regular starter at right-back, and sources have told Football Insider that Porro could be Spurs' next captain if Cristian Romero leaves soon.

The 26-year-old has been linked to Barcelona recently, despite his extension, and he admitted last week that a move cannot be ruled out in the future.

Speaking to the media, Porro said: “Right now, as I said before, I’m very happy at Spurs because they’ve supported me. They’ve given me a renewal that I think I’ve earned. So, in that respect, I’m very happy there.

“Regarding what you said about Barca and all that, people talk and want the best for their clubs. I’m focused right now on the national team and Tottenham. We’ll see what happens tomorrow, because you never know what can happen in football.”
