Pedro Porro 'tempted' by Barcelona switch after Tottenham agreement

Published on:

Pedro Porro could be tempted by a move to Barcelona despite agreeing a new contract with Tottenham in the summer.

The 27-year-old put pen to paper on a new deal in June to extend his contact until 2031, while Spurs have also reserved the option for a further one-year extension.

However, as they continue to struggle in the Premier League and are winless in five games following back-to-back 17th-placed finishes, they are at risk of losing key players.

Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that if Roberto De Zerbi cannot turn Spurs' form around, Porro could be among a number of players eyeing an exit.

Barcelona's interest is expected to be alluring for the wing-back, who could return to Spain after he helped his country to win the World Cup during the summer.

Should Tottenham miss out on qualifying for Europe again, there will be offers for some of their best players, and Porro could be among those tempted to quit.

Could Tottenham accept offers for Pedro Porro?

Football Insider revealed earlier this year that Tottenham's offer of a new contract to Porro was designed to ward off growing interest from rival clubs across Europe.

While his decision to extend his stay has placed the club in a strong position to dictate his future, it has not deterred his potential suitors, and that has led to concerns.

Much will depend on whether Tottenham can turn around their early-season form, but should they continue to struggle, it may be difficult to keep their best players.

"It's going to be interesting to see what happens with players like Pedro Porro," Brown told Football Insider.

"The key will be if Tottenham continue to struggle, because if they finish down the bottom of the table again, it's going to be very hard to keep hold of their best players.

"He's been happy at Tottenham, that's why he signed a new contract in the summer, but if they keep finishing low down the table and they're not in Europe, how long will that last?

"He's on a long-term contract, but if Barcelona come calling, I think there is a very real chance that he could be tempted away.

"It would mean a move back to Spain, where he's obviously very highly thought of after winning the World Cup, and maybe that's something he would be interested in.

"As I say, I'm told he's happy at Tottenham for now, but that might change if their results don't improve quickly."

Which other clubs are interested in signing Porro?

Barcelona are not the only club who will be keen on signing Porro if he does decide to leave Tottenham in the near future and if the club continue to struggle for results.

The full-back has been high on the radar of top European clubs thanks to his outstanding performances for club and country, despite his decision to remain at Spurs.

Football Insider revealed earlier this year that Man City have been long-term admirers of Porro and were tempted to make a move before he penned a new deal.

The right-back position has long been an area of focus at the Etihad, where Mateus Nunes has impressed, but there has been consideration towards signing a more natural option.

When Porro signed an extension to his Tottenham contract, it put an end to the now renewed speculation, but the club's struggles could attract new interest.
