'This is what I've heard about new Lucas Bergvall exit twist at Tottenham' - journalist
Lucas Bergvall is stuck in an extremely difficult predicament as the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder pushes for a move away.
The Sweden international has already made it clear that he wants to leave in search of more game time, with Nottingham Forest understood to be interested.
Undoubtedly, the Tricky Trees will not be the only club vying for his signature, as he returns from the 2026 World Cup after being knocked out by France.
Despite making 23 appearances in the Premier League last season, just 11 of them were starts for the Lilywhites, and his decision to choose Spurs over Barcelona has totally backfired.
Now, Bergvall and Spurs are stuck in a back-and-forth about his future just two summers on from his £8.5million move from Djurgarden.
Rumours are expected to swirl right until the end of the summer transfer window, but the latest update may have just poured cold water over all of it.
Lucas Bergvall set to be stuck at Tottenham
Football Insider revealed that Forest were behind a £43m bid for the talented midfielder, but the Reds will have to look elsewhere, it would appear.
Taking to X (2 July) about the situation, Sky Sports' Michael Bridge wrote: "Understand Lucas Bergvall has been told he's not leaving Spurs.
"The 20-year-old midfielder had made the club aware of his desire to move on in search of a fresh start due to concerns over his first-team involvement.
"Nottingham Forest are one of the clubs that have a strong interest in the Sweden international, who has five years left on his deal."
This update will be hugely frustrating for the player, especially with Mateus Fernandes now signed from West Ham United and Sandro Tonali on his way.
How does Bergvall fit into Roberto De Zerbi's plans?
It's tough to see exactly how De Zerbi is going to fully utilise Bergvall's talents when he continues to strike deals for competitors in his position.
Tonali and Fernandes are both bound to be above him in the pecking order, with Archie Gray, Rodrigo Bentancur and Conor Gallagher all needing to fit in.
Pape Sarr is more than likely to follow in the footsteps of Yves Bissouma, whose contract has now expired, but there are still too many figures in midfield.
To answer the question, it doesn't seem like Bergvall does fit into De Zerbi's plans, especially not when everyone in the squad is injury-free.
This will also come as a huge blow to Forest, who were likely viewing him as a replacement for the exit-bound Elliot Anderson.
