Tottenham accelerate plan to sign 'new striker' as Dominic Solanke's future thrown into doubt
Tottenham Hotspur are accelerating plans to sign a replacement for Dominic Solanke ahead of the January transfer window.
The 29-year-old has endured a frustrating start to the season at Spurs, but continues to lead the line due to a lack of depth in attacking areas after the summer window.
Despite scoring a late equaliser during the 1-1 draw with Man United at Old Trafford, the centre-forward missed other opportunities and struggled to provide a threat up front.
Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Roberto De Zerbi does not feel he can rely on Solanke to be a consistent source of goals this season.
While he still has a role to play in the squad given the lack of availabile alternatives, there is a feeling that a more consistent option is required if they are to have success this season.
Goalscoring has already become a major concern for De Zerbi's side, who have failed to find the net in four of their eight games this season, with Solanke shouldering the blame.
How does Dominic Solanke feel about Tottenham's plans?
Football Insider revealed on 11 October that Solanke is determined to stay and fight for his place at Tottenham despite what has been a frustrating start to the season.
If Tottenham are successful in their attempts to land a new striker in the mid-season, he is likely to be seen as competition rather than an out-and-out replacement.
After his goal against Man United, Solanke will be aiming to continue his run of form, but work is already ongoing in the background to identify a new attacking option.
"Tottenham know they have to do something about their goalscoring, so they want to sign a new striker," Brown told Football Insider.
"Now, that can probably be said about most clubs in the Premier League, every club wants a top-class striker and it's not always as easy as just going out and bringing somebody in.
"But it's starting to become a real problem for Tottenham, because there are some obvious doubts about Solanke and his performances.
"Obviously he got the goal at Old Trafford, but it wasn't exactly an inspiring performance otherwise; he struggled to make much of an impact on that game and did miss other chances.
"He is not good enough to lead the line every week unfortunately, and unless he can turn things around and prove otherwise, then they'll want to bring in a replacement.
"Robert De Zerbi can't rely on Solanke to score the goals, I think he knows that, but at the moment he doesn't have the options available to change things."
Which strikers are on Tottenham's radar?
Tottenham are considering a number of strikers who they feel could improve their options ahead of the January transfer window, with work ongoing behind the scenes.
Multiple targets have been identified, with scouts working to assess players both domestically and abroad as the position has become a priority for the mid-season window.
Football Insider revealed on 9 October that Tottenham are now firmly in the race to sign Real Madrid star Endrick on loan if he is allowed to leave Los Blancos in January.
Jose Mourinho could give the green light for the Brazil international to leave amid a lack of playing time, and a number of interested clubs have been placed on high alert.
Spurs spent big in the summer window, leading to concerns about their ability to continue that outlay, and a loan move for Endrick could be ideal in that case.
