Tottenham: Cristian Romero transfer decision made after deal already agreed

Inter Milan are lining up a move to sign Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero despite their recent signing, sources have told Football Insider.

The 28-year-old will be allowed to leave Spurs this summer, placing a number of European clubs on high alert, with talks ongoing as the race for his signature begins.

Inter Milan have been widely tipped to make a move for the centre-back, but their pursuit was thrown into doubt following the arrival of former Man City star John Stones.

However, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Inter are still keen on signing Romero despite completing a deal for Stones.

A move to Serie A is expected to appeal to the Argentina international, who is keen to leave Tottenham after a frustrating couple of seasons in North London.

Inter Milan are not alone in their pursuit, though, with clubs across Europe and especially in Spain also keeping a close eye on his situation with possible moves in mind.

Will Inter Milan sign Cristian Romero from Tottenham?

Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 21 July that Romerto is now considered "certain" to leave Spurs before the start of the new season.

He is not part of Roberto De Zerbi's plans, as shown in Spurs' efforts to sign new centre-backs, and it is now just a matter of where he will go rather than if he will go.

Inter Milan are now well-placed to make a move despite having signed Stones, and are keen to get a deal over the line in the near future.

Speaking on the Transfer Inisder podcast, I explained: "Yeah, I think there'll be a lot of clubs who would be interested in Romero. Roberto de Zerbi's admitted that the player is likely to move on.

"The player himself has indicated that he would like to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a new challenge as well.

"Inter Milan are admirers of him, they've obviously brought in John Stones as well, but, from what my sources at Spurs tell me, don't rule them out totally of maybe bringing in another defender with Romero.

"Stones has gone in there, he's a good pickup on a free transfer, but they could still do with another centre-back and Romero is high on their list.

"As I said, if they do want to strengthen their backline further I'm sure they would consider making a move for Romero as well."

Which other clubs are in the race for Romero?

Despite Inter Milan being well-placed to pull off a deal, it will not be striaghtforward due to the number of clubs also keen to lure Romero away from Tottenham.

A number of clubs in Spain have been linked with moves, including both Real Madrid and Barcelona, who are believed to be keeping a close eye on his situation.

Meanwhile, Brown told Football Insider on 23 July that Atletico Madrid are leading the race to sign Romero as Diego Simeone hopes to finally act on their long-term interest.

This comes following his impressive World Cup campaign with Argentina, where he played alongside a number of his potential future teammates.

Those teammates include the likes of Julian Alvarez, Nico Gonzalez, Nahuel Molina and Giuliano Simeone among others, and Romero could be the latest to make the move.
