Tottenham must hijack Ipswich Town's Breel Embolo move as price tag revealed
Premier League supporters are often surprised that football's cult hero Breel Embolo has never had a stint in the division.
Tottenham Hotspur could be the team to finally change that, though, after the 29-year-old's move to MLS side Atlanta United collapsed.
Unsurprisingly, having notched 10 goals and three assists for Rennes in 2025-26, Embolo was a star figure during the 2026 World Cup.
He caught the attention of many when scoring twice and assisting another two, before then being sent off in bizarre circumstances against Argentina.
It was controversial in the sense that VAR intervened, advising a second look at the player's dive, which saw him given a second yellow.
However, an incident like that could never take away from the centre-forward's pedigree in front of goal, something that Roberto De Zerbi will be desperate for.
Why Breel Embolo would be perfect for Tottenham
While the Lilywhites have signed upgrades all over the pitch, an injured Dominic Solanke remains first-choice at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Football Insider understands that Spurs plan to accept an offer for Richarlison, but no concrete moves have been made for the Brazilian just yet.
Even if Solanke does remain the first-choice striker, Embolo's impact off the bench would be second-to-none, but they're running out of time to act.
According to L'Equipe, Ipswich Town are closing in on a deal for the Swiss international, who had a €17million (£14.5m) deal in place with Atlanta United.
The Tractor Boys are currently favourites, but that doesn't mean that the Lilywhites can't strike a last-ditch for the World Cup hero.
Should Spurs be concerned by Embolo's injury record?
Links with Embolo have often been greeted with worries over his injury potential, having been linked with Spurs as recently as last year.
However, the last time he missed a bulk of matches was during the 2023-24 season, being sidelined for just three games due to a muscle issue.
Before that, he did miss an entire season with an ACL tear, and during his time in the Bundesliga, he created a name for himself when it came to injuries.
Those days appear to be behind him now. And if De Zerbi wants a huge-impact player off the bench, a bargain deal for Embolo should be where Spurs focus.
