Tottenham set sights on Morgan Gibbs-White move after ‘ugly’ Evangelos Marinakis row

Tottenham could make another move to sign Morgan Gibbs-White in January after failing with an offer last year, sources have told Football Insider.

Gibbs-White has been one of the Premier League's standout playmakers over the last 12 months at Nottingham Forest.

He was a top target for Spurs last summer, but they were unable to get a deal done as Evangelos Marinakis accused them of making illegal contact with his agent.

The 26-year-old signed a new three-year deal following the saga and went on to impress last season with 15 goals in 37 league appearances.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Spurs retain an interest in Gibbs-White and could try and sign him in an upcoming transfer window.

Roberto De Zerbi is under pressure after a tough start to the campaign and the club are set to explore the transfer market for more new arrivals if their struggles continue.

Gibbs-White is the leading Premier League scorer in 2026, having netted 13 times since the start of the calendar year.

His future has been heavily discussed over the last few months, after he decided to switch representatives in August from the powerful CAA Stellar to ROOF.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "They tried hard two summers ago to sign Gibbs-White and it got a bit ugly in the end with the Forest owner, Evangelos Marinakis, threatening legal action before he ended up tying down Gibbs-White to a new contract which made him the highest-paid player at the club.

"That showed how much faith Forest had in him and how important he is to their plans going forward as well. I'm sure that Tottenham's interest still remains in Gibbs-White."

Tottenham's transfer plans are continuing ahead of January, despite uncertainty over De Zerbi's future at the club.

The Italian has overseen just four wins in 13 competitive games in charge since being handed a lucrative five-year contract by Spurs in April.

Doubts around his future have led to discussions over who could replace him in North London, but sources have revealed to Football Insider that Tottenham are unlikely to turn to former boss Pochettino if De Zerbi is sacked.

He has long been linked with a return to the club, but recently extended his contract with the United States Soccer Federation until 2030 after leading them to the World Cup round of 16 stage.
