Tottenham should accelerate move for Norway star as stats from display vs Brazil emerge
Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs said to be considering a move for Benfica winger Andreas Schjelderup this summer.
Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the 22-year-old, who exploded onto the scene as Norway stunned Brazil 2-1 in the World Cup last 16 on Sunday.
The winger was brought on at half-time and transformed the game, providing assists for both of Erling Haaland's goals, before Neymar scored a late consolation.
Schjelderup has just two years remaining on his contract at Benfica, and originally attracted attention when he scored twice against Real Madrid in January.
Having spent much of the first half of the season on the bench, the left-sided winger became a regular starter and scored six goals and provided four assists in his final 14 games of the Liga Portugal season.
Schjelderup is now looking for a move to the Premier League this summer, and could reportedly be available for a fee in the region of £35million.
Andreas Schjelderup stuns in thrilling cameo
Schjelderup has started only one game at the World Cup so far, and claimed an assist and was among Norway's best players in their 4-1 defeat to France.
Against Brazil, he was turned to by Stale Solbakken for an impact. Antonio Nusa had enjoyed positive moments in the first half, but was lacking the end product.
Immediately, his replacement looked to drive forward and feed Haaland. The winger completed a successful dribble and made five recoveries, always thinking positively.
He was secure, too, completing 25 of his 27 attempted passes, and doing his defensive work with a tackle and interception completed.
Even before his assist, Schjelderup went close to breaking the deadlock. The 22-year-old's snapshot was saved well by Alisson.
And just minutes later, he would fly past his defender before looping a perfect ball into the box and onto the head of Haaland, who made no mistake.
The winger's second assist was less impressive. The Manchester City striker took his simple pass and knocked it into the bottom corner from 23 yards.
But Schjelderup's stunning efficiency in attack will have caught eyes across Europe.
What Michael Essien said about Schjelderup
Chelsea legend Michael Essien spent time with Schjelderup at Nordsjaelland, where his senior career began.
"Schjelde has everything to take even bigger steps," he told VG. "The sky's the limit. He can play for the biggest clubs in the world. Personally, I'd like to see him at Real Madrid or another big club.
"I watch Benfica's games when I can. When Andreas has the ball, he almost seems faster with it than without it. There aren't many players like that. When he accelerates, it's very difficult to stop him."
With Tottenham in need of fresh blood in attack this summer, Schjelderup may well represent a smart piece of business.
