Tottenham told to address '£160m' striker problem as Roberto De Zerbi rebuild intensifies

Published on

Tottenham Hotspur must address their '£160million' striker problem if Roberto De Zerbi is to transform their fortunes next season.

That is the opinion of former Tottenham senior scout Bryan King, who exclusively spoke to Football Insider.

Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke have already arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, in a clear signal of intent.

Tottenham have also been heavily linked with a move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with talks over a significant fee ongoing.

But there is far more that needs to happen to strengthen De Zerbi's squad, after the Italian saw his team narrowly survive relegation from the Premier League on the final day last month.

Several outgoings are expected to take place in the coming months, with it having emerged that Luka Vuskovic and Lucas Bergvall are both keen to leave the club this summer.

Bryan King slams 'bad recruitment'

Tottenham's striking options this season were made up of Dominic Solanke, Richarlison, Mathys Tel and Randal Kolo Muani.

Between them, they scored 19 Premier League goals, with 11 of those coming from Richarlison.

Kolo Muani has returned to PSG, while Solanke will spend the summer attempting to recover from the recurring injuries he has suffered since joining Tottenham.

With Richarlison's contract in north London only having a year remaining, there is far from security over his future, either.

"For me, you've got three centre-forwards at Tottenham, you've got Richarlison, you've got Solanke and you've got Tel," King told Football Insider.

"That's £160million, that is. £160m. When you talk about bad recruitment, for me that's bad recruitment. Because the three of them put together haven't scored 20 goals.

"And, you know, they're talking about bringing in new front players at Tottenham."

Roberto De Zerbi faces issues across the pitch

After such a dismal season from a defensive point of view, especially, Tottenham's desire to strengthen at the back first is understandable.

With the additions of Robertson, Senesi and Van Hecke, the Lilywhites have already made considerable improvements.

But the reality is that three signings do not begin to cover the extent of the rebuild required at Tottenham.

In midfield and attack, there is still plenty of work that needs to be done before De Zerbi can begin to think about a push back towards the European spots next season.
