Tottenham would be 'stupid' to accept Djed Spence offer amid Everton interest

Published on

Tottenham Hotspur would be mad to accept anything below £50million for Djed Spence this summer.

That is the opinion of former senior Tottenham and Everton scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

The Toffees are interested in a move for the 25-year-old, who has impressed off the bench for England at the World Cup.

Spence is under contract at Tottenham until 2029 with an option of an additional year, but there has been talk of an exit for around £25m this summer.

Everton are keen to sign a new full-back following the departure of Seamus Coleman, and signing the England international would represent a significant coup.

Spence was excellent off the bench against Norway on Saturday as England won 2-1 to go to the World Cup quarter-final.

Bryan King dismisses idea of selling Djed Spence

Part of what makes Spence such a valuable player to have in the squad is his versatility.

The defender has played at both left-back and right-back throughout his career, and is more than capable of playing both to a high standard.

Yet at Tottenham, the 25-year-old is in danger of being second-choice for both of them.

Destiny Udogie is likely the first choice at left-back and is now supported by new arrival Andy Robertson, while Pedro Porro has signed a new contract and is not going anywhere on the right of the defence.

Roberto De Zerbi did not seem to fancy Spence when he arrived in April, but he has been urged to find a role for him.

"I think he's done well every time he's played for England. They'd be foolish to let him go for £25m, that is for sure," King told Football Insider.

"You wouldn't let him go for £25m. You wouldn't even start thinking about letting him go for under £50m. We're talking about a young, current England international. It's a situation where Tottenham would be stupid to let him go."

The stats behind Spence's excellent cameo vs Norway

Spence was brought on against Norway in the 86th minute, in a move that sparked some surprise.

Immediately it was clear why Thomas Tuchel had opted for the Tottenham man, however, when he chased down and blocked Orjan Haskjold Nyland's attempted clearance.

Including extra-time, Spence made a successful dribble and won all but one of the five duels he contested.

The 25-year-old made two tackles, four clearances, an interception and two recoveries, and was key to seeing out the win.

He looked to have won a penalty in extra-time with a brilliant dribble into the box, but replays showed he had gone down too softly.
