Tottenham's windfall revealed after record-breaking pre-season tour

Tottenham Hotspur's pre-season tour of Australia and New Zealand is unlikely to have come at a low price this summer.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Tottenham's windfall from the tour will not be as much as many expect.

Roberto De Zerbi's side defeated Auckland FC at Eden Park before travelling to Sydney FC, and winning on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Spurs then faced their bitter London rivals Chelsea at the Accor Stadium on Saturday, 1 August, as plans continued ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

It was the Auckland FC game that caught the headlines, though, welcoming 40,112 fans to the stadium, the highest-ever attendance for a men’s football match in New Zealand’s history.

Despite the record-breaking attendance halfway across the world, Borson has poured cold water over the potential of a huge payday for Spurs.

Tottenham pre-season tour to earn 'a few million pounds'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson explained that the pre-season tour is seen as a "marketing event," rather than a chance to make millions.

"To be honest, not that lucrative. A few million pounds total, but not very expensive at all. It's not cheap to take 50 people, let's say, to that part of the world," he said.

"It'll be worth low-digit millions probably, total. It won't move the dial particularly, it's more a marketing event and a bit of fitness.

"But it's got to be enough to make it worthwhile for them going, so you can say it definitely won't be nothing. If it was nothing, you wouldn't go.

"The tours generally are more lucrative than just going to Europe for training camps."

What's next for Roberto De Zerbi's side?

There is still plenty of time for twists and turns before the 2026-27 campaign kicks off, including transfers and injuries.

Lucas Bergvall and Cristian Romero are both expected to leave, while the likes of Richarlison, Archie Gray and Manor Solomon all have the option to leave.

Every player still has a chance to prove themselves, though, with friendly fixtures against Getafe and Hoffenheim waiting for them back in North London.

The Lilywhites' pre-season tour is over for those in other corners of the globe, but De Zerbi still has creases to iron out before the new season kicks off.
