Insider shares Lucas Bergvall release clause as Tottenham 'issues' revealed

Tottenham Hotspur’s move to tie midfielder Lucas Bergvall down to a new contract won’t have totally alleviated his concerns regarding his long-term future.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the fresh agreement has at least given the Lilywhites a stronger negotiating position if clubs take an interest in Bergvall again.

The 20-year-old’s new deal comes just months after he asked to leave the North London outfit, who knocked away bids of below £50million from both Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

Wyness believes that Spurs will have had to accept the addition of a release clause as part of their move to tie the Sweden international down, which could create issues for them later down the line. 

Bergvall is tipped to have a huge future ahead of him, but received limited minutes under Roberto De Zerbi at the back end of last season.

That has continued into the new campaign, as the youngster has played just 72 minutes of football across his team’s opening four Premier League games. 

Tottenham and Lucas Bergvall still at odds

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that both Tottenham and Bergvall will be content with a release clause being put in place.

The starlet was already tied down at Spurs until 2031, and the new deal strengthen their grip on his future even further, even if there are still concerns from the player behind the scenes.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained how Bergvall’s new deal has provided clarity over his future.

“I don't think it's necessarily solved all the issues, but certainly it gives them a much stronger position in terms of negotiation over the price that they would ultimately let him go at,” he said.

“Now there may have been a new release clause put in that contract, so it may well be a price in there that they've decided, which he would have agreed to.

“So that should make everything a little bit clearer and cleaner as well, should it come to it.”

Bergvall’s situation at Spurs hasn’t changed

Wyness told Football Insider earlier this week that Bergvall’s new deal likely means that Spurs could potentially sell up for up to £80million now they have added security over his future.

However, that lofty valuation simply isn’t reflected by the amount of trust that Roberto De Zerbi seemingly has in the youngster. 

Bergvall appeared in seven of the Lilywhites’ 10 Champions League games last season, a competition which quickly became their top priority amid poor league form, but was then quickly cast aside by De Zerbi.

Bergvall has started just four competitive games since the Italian took the reins at the end of March, with two of those coming in the Carabao Cup this season. 

He is clearly not fancied by the new boss, and it is hard to see how his situation at the club has truly changed since he asked to leave in the summer.
