Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on a deal to sign Juventus star Jonathan David as they step up plans to sign a new striker, sources have told Football Insider.

The 26-year-old moved to Juventus from Lille last summer but has so far failed to stake his claim for a regular position in the starting XI.

After 39 appearances across all competitions, the Canada international has scored just seven goals and provided five assists, leading to suggestions he could move on.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Tottenham are among the clubs keeping a close eye on his performances.

Tottenham hope to sign a new striker this summer, and sources say David has been on their radar for a while, but a deal may prove difficult to pull off.

Football Insider revealed ahead of the mid-season transfer window that Tottenham are interested in signing David and he ranks highly on their shortlist.

Despite what has been a difficult season since his move to Juventus, the striker remains highly rated by a number of clubs across Europe.

Tottenham have been long-term admirers, and while Dominic Solanke remains their first-choice striker, it is a position they would like to improve in the summer.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Tottenham are long-term admirers of David. They were interested before he made that free transfer to Juventus last summer.

"He has struggled, it's fair to say, since his arrival as Juve aren't having the best of seasons. He's scored seven goals in 39 appearances, just 16 starts in Serie A.

"But he's under contract until 2030 so it won't be an easy deal to do for any club interested in signing Jonathan David.

"A lot could depend on where Juventus find themselves in the summer, if they're in the Champions League or not.

"If they are in the Champions League, it will give them more money to spend to strengthen their squad and that could mean David is pushed out."

Could Dominic Solanke leave Tottenham this summer?

Alongside Spurs' ambitions of signing another striker in the summer transfer window, speculation has emerged that Solanke could be set to leave the club.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider on 15 March that Solanke is a target for Newcastle, who are also looking to bolster up front.

Discussions could be taking place behind the scenes about the striker's long-term future, with a number of clubs likely keeping tabs on his situation.

Solanke has made just 11 Premier League appearances so far this season after spending a lengthy spell on the sidelines, leading to frustrations.

Meanwhile, if Spurs are relegated from the Premier League, a number of their first-team stars are expected to search for moves elsewhere.
