Keith Wyness reveals how much 'headroom' Tottenham have for late signing spree
Tottenham Hotspur are set to splash the cash on several more new additions in the final stages of the summer transfer window.
That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Lilywhites’ recent sales have opened the door for further incomings.
The North London outfit have already triggered their next spending spree by agreeing a deal to sign Savinho from Manchester City for an initial £75million.
Wyness believes that several more new faces are likely to arrive before the 1 September deadline, and is clear that the exits of Cristian Romero and Djed Spence have freed up significant space in both the club’s transfer and wage budgets.
Romero joined Atletico Madrid in a £34m deal, while Spence departed for Inter Milan, as Spurs netted just shy of £65m for the pair of first-team stars.
Savinho is now in line to become their seventh signing of a busy summer, but Wyness fully expects more incomings to follow after the financial boost.
Tottenham remain clear of SCR after sales
Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Tottenham are still not in any danger of breaching the Premier League’s SCR rules, despite their big spending.
He made it clear that Romero was effectively already “amortised” given that over four seasons have now passed since his £42.5m move from Atalanta, while he also noted that Spurs have made a significant profit on Spence.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness was quick to outline that Tottenham’s business is likely far from done.
“Yeah, I think Spurs are still going to be moving along, certainly. I expect them to still be busy late in the window,” he said.
“Romero was basically good to the bottom line because he was effectively amortised already. I think Djed Spence was brought in on the cheap, so again, good headroom there.
“So it does give them some movement and some flexibility in terms of who they bring in.
“It was good deals for both of those, and there's still headroom, so I do expect Spurs to be active.”
Tottenham eye move for Jean-Philippe Mateta
Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on Thursday that his former club are lining up a late move to sign Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The Frenchman is out of contract at Selhurst Park in June 2027, although the Eagles remain hugely reluctant to lose him.
However, Brown believes that Spurs feel a cut-price deal could be on the cards for them before the 1 September deadline.
The ex-recruitment boss made it clear that Roberto De Zerbi wants to strengthen his frontline, and feels that an upgrade on Dominic Solanke is needed.
