Tottenham idol issues 'perfect' Dane Scarlett claim after Saturday development

Paul Robinson has claimed Portsmouth is the “perfect” place for Tottenham striker Dane Scarlett to develop his game this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one said the 18-year-old needs experience “playing football where it matters.”

On Wednesday (27 July), Spurs confirmed Scarlett had moved to Fratton Park on a season-long loan deal.

The teenage striker made his debut for Pompey on Saturday.

He was a second-half substitute in a 3-3 draw against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

When asked by Football Insider if Fratton Park was the right place for Scarlett to learn and improve this season, Robinson said: “It’s the perfect place.

“I believe he will go there and score goals. It is good for him at his age to go out and get experience.

“I have always been a fan of young players going out and getting experience against players who have mortgages and bills to pay. It is about playing football where it matters, not just for the under-23s at the training ground.

“Competitive football at 3 o’clock on a Saturday in front of a full crowd is an experience, a learning curve. I think the move will do him the world of good.

“Spurs have sent a lot of youth out on loan over the past two years and not much has come back and made an impression on the first team.

“You’d say only [Oliver] Skipp has made a difference. He is the last bit of success that has come back on loan.

“Scarlett has to make it work for himself.”

Scarlett made seven appearances for Tottenham’s first team across all competitions last season.

He has four years remaining on his contract in north London.
