Pundit: It would 'blessing in disguise' if Tottenham-Conte talks collapse amid key reveal
Antonio Conte’s penchant for signing older players means it could be a “blessing in disguise” if talks to bring him to Tottenham collapse.
That is according to ex-Premier League shot-stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively after Football Insider revealed that Spurs are increasingly confident of appointing Conte.
The Italian is now the clear frontrunner for the role after talks took place all day yesterday.
Conte’s Serie A-winning Inter Milan side had the third-oldest average age in the division in 2020-21, as per Transfermrkt.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy recently penned an open letter to fans reiterating his “desire to see young players flourish” at the club.
Kenny claimed that Conte would be an “unbelievable capture” but highlighted that his short-term thinking might not suit an “ambitious club” like Spurs.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “This would be a massive statement if they could get him. But I’d be surprised if they could.
“Having said that, Tottenham are a big club, brilliant stadium, fantastic facilities, you just never know. What an achievement that would be.
“To get someone who has just won the Italian league comfortably would be an unbelievable capture.
“But on the other hand, he does sign older players and Tottenham are a very ambitious club.
“Maybe if that’s the case then it might be a blessing in disguise if it doesn’t come off.”
Conte’s Inter won the title by 12 points, ending Juventus’ nine-year stranglehold on the Scudetto.
The 51-year-old was also a league champion in 2017 during his two-year stint with Spurs’ London rivals Chelsea.
