Danny Mills has claimed the “biggest problem” facing Tottenham in the upcoming transfer window is potential departures.
The former Leeds United full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested experienced defenders Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld could leave this summer.
Jose Mourinho revealed to Sky Sports this week that the Lilywhites are “not going to spend rivers of money” in the upcoming window out of “respect” for the coronavirus pandemic.
The club received widespread criticism for their decision in March, which was overturned in April, to furlough their non-playing staff.
The upcoming transfer market is expected to be characterised by reduced fees, free agents and loan deals as clubs’ revenues have all suffered over the past two and a half months.
When asked by Football Insider if Mourinho’s comments should be of concern to Spurs fans, Mills said: “It is going to be very, very difficult.
“Spurs’ biggest problem is who they lose. Vertonghen, Alderweireld could well go and they have already lost Eriksen.
“It is going to be interesting to see what happens in the transfer market and who is prepared to spend money with everything that is going on.
“There is always a spin and an argument to justify spending but it will interesting to see how that dynamic fits with fans.”
Vertonghen, 33, looks nailed on to leave Spurs having rejected the option of a contract extension that would see him remain beyond the completion of the 2019/20 campaign.
However, fellow centre-half Alderweireld, 31, signed a contract extension in December that sees him tied down in North London until June 2023.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that the club have set their sights on multiple French deals.
