While relegation might be a bitter disappointment for the clubs that go down, it has often been a chance for the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool to snap up some star talent not keen on dropping down a division.
Both sets of fans need to look at Newcastle United’s demise at the end of the 2015/16 season for an example, with Spurs taking Moussa Sissoko and Liverpool sealing a deal for Georginio Wijnaldum as the Magpies headed into the Championship.
Obviously, not every move is a success, but this season the clubs can try to make the most of other side’s misfortunes with some top players having failed to escape a relegation battle despite their impressive abilities.
Of those set to drop into England’s second tier, Stoke City could argue that they have the most talented squad, and that could see them ship out their prized assets to gain funds as well as avoid a drop in morale with unhappy players.
It is claimed by the Gambling Times that both Tottenham and Liverpool are eyeing up a swoop for the Potters’ diminutive pocket rocket Xherdan Shaqiri this summer – but it must be Spurs, not the Reds, who seal the deal.
The 5’5″ attacker is blessed with lightning pace and a hammer of a left foot, as well as superb close control which has seen him torment defences during his time in England, scoring seven times and chipping in with six assists in 32 appearances this season.
However, moving to Liverpool makes little sense considering the attacking options already at their disposal, and the 26-year-old would find himself playing second fiddle to the likes of Mohamed Salah throughout the season.
Tottenham meanwhile are lacking the sort of trickery the Swiss star can dish out, and he has the X factor that has been missing so many times from Pochettino’s side this season.
It could well come to a bidding war this summer, and if that is the case, Daniel Levy must splash the cash and blow the Reds away.
In other Tottenham transfer news, the club’s top target must be a powerhouse sensation after a big money revelation.
