Tottenham news: Expert issues verdict on Graham Potter replacing Antonio Conte amid £10m report
Appointing Graham Potter to replace Antonio Conte would not be a step down for Tottenham despite his lack of experience at the top level.
That is the view of former Leeds striker Noel Whelan, who was speaking exclusively to Football Insider in the wake of continuing rumours about the Italian’s future.
As per The Telegraph (6 May), Brighton boss Potter is the top target at Tottenham if Conte is to leave the club at the end of this season.
The report claims Spurs would have to pay £10million to prise the former Swansea boss, who is under contract until June 2025, away from the Amex Stadium.
Football Insider revealed earlier this year (18 February) that Conte is a target for Paris Saint-Germain – who are mulling over the sacking of incumbent boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Whelan hailed the job Potter is doing under significant restrictions at Brighton.

“I think Potter is a very intelligent manager,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“You need only look at the style of play and philosophy he’s brought to Brighton – and he’s now getting results, with them having their best-ever season.
“Unfortunately, he’s not entirely given the transfer backing that he would perhaps get at Tottenham. He could attract a higher calibre of player at Spurs as well.
“He’s admired by many Premier League managers for the job he’s done.
“I don’t think it would be a step down from Conte at all.”
Brighton sit ninth and are on course for their best-ever top-flight finish.
Conte, who is under contract until June 2023, has steered Tottenham to fifth in his first season at the club.
