Tottenham transfer news: Major Sam Johnstone update after plug pulled on loan deal - Sources

Tottenham are set to watch West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in action on Sunday as they step up plans to recruit a back-up goalkeeper, Football Insider understands.

The Londoners have a longstanding interest in the England international, 29, and he is still on their radar.

A recruitment source has told Football insider that a senior Spurs scout will assess Johnstone in action for West Brom in their Championship clash against Birmingham City on Sunday.

The Londoners are in the market for a new keeper even though Hugo Lloris signed a new contract in January that runs until the summer of 2024.

As revealed by Football Insider last month, Spurs have no plans to convert Pierluigi Gollini’s loan into a permanent deal.

His loan is believed to be an obligation to buy if he makes 20 first-team appearances this season but he is 10 short of that mark, with Lloris having an iron grip on the number one shirt.

Tottenham want cover and competition for their longstanding first choice for next season.

Johnstone has been targeted as he is out of contract in the summer and available on a free transfer.

But there is extensive competition for the keeper from Premier League clubs and he has also been linked with Rangers.

Tottenham signed Gollini from Atalanta last summer on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy.

He replaced Joe Hart, who quit for Celtic, as the new Spurs number two.

Johnstone was named West Brom’s Supporters’ Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year for last season’s 2020-21 campaign.

He has been a mainstay of the starting XI again this term, conceding 29 goals from his 33 Championship appearances.

In other news, Tottenham deal is all but done as “phenomenal” player agrees long-term deal.
