Liverpool out of picture as PL giants in two-horse race to sign La Liga sensation - reports

By Matt Farr

Liverpool look to have cooled their interest in Real Madrid attacker James Rodriguez this summer, according to a report.

Spanish news outlet Don Balon claims that interest has cooled across the board after a poor season for Rodriguez, with just two sides now left in the race for his signature – Arsenal and Manchester United.

Earlier this month, Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, had claimed that Liverpool were pushing hard for a deal for the Colombian playmaker and that £30million would seal the deal.

However, that appears to be no longer the case, after a stuttering season that has seen Rodriguez make just nine starts in La Liga.

Across all competitions, Rodriguez has scored six goals in 27 appearances and is said to have no first-team future under manager Zinedine Zidane.

However, according to Don Balon, Rodriguez is still wanted in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho sees him as an integral part of his new Man United squad and has made contact over a summer transfer.

Arsenal, meanwhile, see him as a possible replacement for star attacker Alexis Sanchez if he chooses to leave the Emirates in the summer.

One destination it seems Rodriguez won’t be heading to is Anfield.

Football Insider verdict:

Liverpool are likely to enter the market this summer for fresh attacking talent, despite splashing the cash on Sadio Mane a year ago, and the top form of Brazilian duo Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho. A move for a player of Rodriguez’s quality would have been a massive statement of intent for the club, who are chasing qualification for the Champions League this season, and could have given them the necessary attacking impetus they need to mount a genuine Premier League title challenge in the coming years. However, it looks like they’ve decided to look elsewhere after a season that hasn’t showcased Rodriguez’ ability adequately. With Man United and Arsenal the two interested parties though, it looks like Rodriguez could be heading to the Premier League, and Liverpool fans will be hoping that he doesn’t come back to haunt them next season.

In other Liverpool transfer news, terms have been agreed for this reported Reds target, who has signed a five-year-deal worth £17million.
