Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Celtic in their pursuit of Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward insisted a potential deal is "worth the risk".

Football Insider revealed at the beginning of the month (June 1) Celtic have enquired about Woodman in discussions with Newcastle over Kristoffer Ajer.

A part-exchange deal could happen but Newcastle would prefer to loan out the stopper with a view to a permanent deal.

The 24-year-old has just completed a second temporary spell with Swansea City who were defeated in the Championship play-off final at the end of last month.

He ended the season with 22 clean sheets in 52 games across all competitions.

Celtic are in desperate need of a new goalkeeper after Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard all failed to nail down a regular starting spot.

Woodman has previous experience in the Scottish game with loan spells with Kilmarnock and Aberdeen.

Asked whether he was the man to solve Celtic's goalkeeping woes, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It’s worth a chance.

“Getting to play there for such a big club, it’s a competitive league too now. They’re not just winning it easily. Rangers have stepped up and taken over.

“It would definitely be a good move and worth the risk, definitely.”

Woodman's father is ex-Crystal Palace goalkeeper and current Bromley manager Andy Woodman who came through the Palace ranks with Gareth Southgate who is Freddie's godfather.

The England boss namechecked his godson in August 2019 as one of the goalkeepers he was monitoring ahead of a possible call up.
